HAPPY AAPI HERITAGE MONTH!

May is the month when the US celebrates the history of Asian Americans and American Pacific Islanders. Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is a time to learn about the history of the many different cultures that make up the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in the US -- which includes everything from the key contributions Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made to the US, to marginalization that's spanned generations.
Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders were commemorated during the first week of May following a congressional resolution passed in 1978. In 1992, the entire month of May was designated to observe AAPI heritage. The month of May was chosen to mark two significant events: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrant to the US on May 7, 1843, and the anniversary of the transcontinental railroad -- which was completed thanks to the labor of tens of thousands of Chinese immigrants -- on May 10, 1869.
This year AAPI Heritage Month takes place against the backdrop of a rise in anti-Asian crimes, including online harassment, during the pandemic, as some people have falsely blamed Asian Americans for the spread of the coronavirus. In addition, eos has made donations to two organizations spearheading efforts to support the AAPI community. You can see our messages amplifying these donations below: Hollaback Sewa International Below are a few of the resources that numerous organizations have put together to gain a better understanding of the AAPI experience. · Must-read books for AAPI month from Penguin Random House . · Best books about Asian American identity from The Strategist . · LA Times reading guide on the Asian American experience. · Nonfiction titles on Asian Americans by the staff at Seattle Public Library . · AAPI books on Goodreads . · Asian Americans , a five-episode film documentary series by PBS. · Netflix subscribers: Celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Stories collection. · HBO Max : a new platform for subscribers called See Us provides a spotlight on AAPI TV and film. · Hulu subscribers: Hulu has put together a page of options for viewing shows and movies on Asian heritage and representation .
