FLORIDA A&M UNIVERSITY

Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University ( FAMU ) is a public historically black land-grant university in Tallahassee, Florida, founded in 1887 and located on the highest geographic hill in Tallahassee. FAMU is the 3rd largest historically black university in the United States by enrollment and the only public historically black university in Florida. It is a member institution of the State University System of Florida, as well as one of the state's land grant universities, and is accredited to award baccalaureate, master's and doctoral degrees by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The 2020 edition of the U.S. News & World Report college rankings placed the university in Tier 1 among "national universities" (254th), 7th among all HBCUs and 2nd among all public HBCUs. It is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity". For 2017, the National Science Foundation ranked FAMU 216th nationally and 2nd among HBCU for total research and development expenditures. FAMU sports teams are known as the "Rattlers" and compete in Division I of the NCAA, as a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). What distinguishes FAMU from other universities is its legacy of providing access to a high-quality, affordable education to many students who otherwise may never have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams of getting a college degree. The CollegeNet and Pay Scale Social Mobility Index (SMI) recognizes FAMU for its commitment to providing pathways for social and economic mobility. SMI ranks FAMU as one of the top colleges and universities in the nation for fostering social and economic opportunity. Students seeking a challenging academic foundation will find a variety of programs to meet their career objectives at FAMU. The University offers 54 bachelor's degrees, 29 master's degrees, three professional degrees, and 12 doctoral programs in a wide range of academic areas. The most popular undergraduate programs are business administration, biology, criminal justice, and allied health. Other majors are available in every field, from animal science to engineering and nursing. Additionally, the school offers several distinctive degree programs. These include such majors as jazz studies, cardiopulmonary sciences, journalism and health informatics and management. In addition to being one of the most beautiful college campuses in the nation, FAMU students have the opportunity to actively engage in a broad range of educational or recreational activities. There are more than 100 recognized student clubs and organizations at FAMU, and the Office of Student Activities provides leadership training opportunities, funding, and other benefits to ensure that student life is as dynamic as possible. FAMU students can also join several honor societies and professional organizations, as well as Greek fraternities and sororities. These organizations foster opportunities to build leadership skills, character, and a sense of philanthropy and civic engagement through community service projects. FAMU students have access to excitement and fun every day at the Student Union, which houses a bowling alley, ballroom, hair salon, and television room, to name a few. This building is also the home of the FAMU student government, making it the center of a well-rounded campus life. Boasting 13 patents, FAMU has the only college of pharmacy nationwide that offers nationally accredited MPH and DrPH degree programs.
