SPELMAN COLLEGE

Spelman College , a historically Black college and a global leader in the education of women of African descent, is dedicated to academic excellence in the liberal arts and sciences and the intellectual, creative, ethical, and leadership development of its students. Through diverse learning modalities, Spelman empowers the whole person to engage the many cultures of the world and inspires a commitment to positive social change. Founded in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary, Spelman received its collegiate charter in 1924, making it America's oldest private historically black liberal arts college for women. . Now a global leader in the education of women of African descent, Spelman is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), and is a proud member of the Atlanta University Center Consortium. Today, Spelman’s student body comprises more than 2,100 students from 43 states and 10 foreign countries. Spelman is dedicated to academic excellence in the liberal arts and sciences and the intellectual, creative, ethical and leadership development of its students, empowering women to engage the many cultures of the world and inspiring a commitment to positive social change through service. Spelman is proud of its 76 percent graduation rate (average over six years), one of the best in the nation, but the Spelman support doesn’t stop at graduation. Spelman’s global alumnae network is strong, providing connections and helping hands to graduates as they begin on their path of global engagement. Sorority life is also a fun and memorable part of the Spelman College experience. Spelman sororities are distinctive communities that support the academic mission of the college by enhancing student learning, scholarship and service. Membership in a sorority provides a home away from home, and expands the bonds of sisterhood in the Spelman community. The primary purpose of sorority life at Spelman College is to assist members with realizing their intellectual, social, physical, and artistic talents and gifts. With leadership and service part of the core values of the Spelman experience, Spelman sororities are also committed to service both on campus and within the greater Atlanta community. In addition, students involved in sorority life develop leadership skills valued by employers and graduate and professional schools, including self-confidence, leadership, scholarship, interpersonal competence, and communication skills.
